Venom: The Last Dance’ Review

Tom Hardy reprises his role as the beleaguered Eddie Brock alongside his shape-shifting symbiote in the third installment of the Venom series, which also marks the fifth entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, a franchise notable for its absence of Spider-Man. This film is directed by British screenwriter Kelly Marcel, who co-wrote the original Venom and penned the less favorably received sequel, 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Venom: The Last Dance 2024 Afdah opens with a humorous jab at the multiverse concept, effectively dismissing the implications raised in the post-credits scene of the last Spider-Man film, which hinted at Venom's entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Returning to their own universe, Eddie and Venom find themselves on the run after the events of the previous film, ultimately arriving at a soon-to-be-retired Area 51 in the Nevada desert. Here, military leader Rex Strickland (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and scientist Dr. Teddy Payne (Juno Temple) have captured and are examining a revived Patrick Mulligan (Stephen Graham) along with his symbiote, Toxin.


As if evading military forces were not challenging enough, Eddie and Venom also face threats from formidable and seemingly indestructible extraterrestrial beings from Venom’s home planet, dispatched by the symbiote's creator, Knull (Andy Serkis). These creatures are in pursuit of a component within Eddie and Venom known as the codex, which may facilitate a large-scale invasion of Earth. The only means to neutralize the codex is for either Eddie or Venom to perish.


Hardy’s engaging dual performance as Eddie and Venom remains the cornerstone of the franchise's appeal, and he delivers another outstanding portrayal, characterized by constant self-dialogue and a surprisingly poignant connection between the two personas. As a result, he provides frequent comedic moments, enhanced by the quirky traits added to Venom’s character, such as his fondness for musicals and David Bowie.
